Funeral insurance in Spain (seguro de decesos)

Many expats in Spain are either unaware of the seguro de decesos (funeral insurance) or often confuse it with life insurance. However, in Spain, these are two very different products.

Why do you need funeral insurance in Spain?

While life insurance provides a financial payout to beneficiaries (which can often take months to process), Spanish funeral insurance is, first and foremost, an immediate assistance policy - the insurance company will organize your funeral or repatriation to your home country and cover costs.
The core purpose of this policy is to completely lift the financial burden and organizational chaos from your loved ones during their most difficult time.

How does the funeral insurance work on practice?

In the event of a claim, your family doesn't need to search for funeral homes, compare prices, or navigate complex Spanish laws.
  • A single phone call:
Just one call to the insurance company's 24/7 support line is enough. Insurance manager will organize the process from A to Z.
  • Immediate action:
From that moment on, the insurer takes full control—from covering all costs to handling logistics.
  • No bureaucracy:
The company's specialists manage all the necessary legal paperwork and death certificates on your behalf.
With a funeral insurance you don't have to worry about missing crucial details due to the language. Your insurance provider acts as your professional guide, ensuring everything is handled correctly and with respect to local regulations.

Question:
What is the difference between funeral insurance and life insurance?
Answer:
Funeral insurance will organize and pay for your funeral and provide immediate assistance to your family, whereas life insurance pays out a portion of the insured capital for the funeral, requiring a family member to organize the service.
Question:
What happens if there is money left over?
Answer:
DKV will refund any remaining balance to the beneficiaries. In the event that the company cannot provide the service due to external reasons, the insurer will pay out the full amount of insured capital. Both conditions are established by Spanish laws: ley 50/1980, Ley de Contrato de Seguro and ey de Ordenación, Supervisión y Solvencia de las Entidades Aseguradoras y Reaseguradoras (LOSSEAR).
Question:
Is there an age limit to buy a policy?
Answer:
There is no strict age limit; however, there are two important points to keep in mind:
  • health questionnaire: a health declaration is required upon application.
  • coverage for seniors (70+): applicants over 70 years old are eligible only for a single-premium policy (prima única, a one-time lump-sum payment). This option covers funeral services strictly within Spain and excludes international repatriation.
Question:
What is the duration of the policy, and how is it renewed?
Answer:
The contract is valid for 12 months and automatically renews annually, unless either party notifies otherwise or in the event of the insured person’s passing.

Cancellation Notice: If you wish to cancel or modify your policy, Spanish law requires written notice at least 31 days before the annual renewal date.
